Review

"Morag has brilliantly put into words the complexities of the human factor at work!"
- Marshall Goldsmith, author of the New York Times and Wall Street Journal best seller, Triggers.

"A comprehensive tour of the most powerful insights about business relationships."
- Keith Ferrazzi, author of bestsellers, Who''s Got Your Back and Never Eat Alone

Morag draws on her extensive business experience with an insightful response. Identifying key relationships that merit our attention most, and how to work effectively with them.
- Michael Roberto, Trustee Professor of Management, Bryant University, and author of Why Great Leaders Don''t Take Yes for an Answer

"Morag Barrett has hit a home run. She has challenged us all to embrace the most important verb in winning lasting and genuine relationships - Cultivate."
- Tommy Spaulding, New York Times bestselling author of It''s Not Just Who You Know

From the Inside Flap

In this informative and accessible book, Morag Barrett shares exceptional knowledge on why a business plan and the newest product mean nothing if you don''t have your people aligned to execute the plan.

Leaders rarely fail because of lack of technical ability, but do so because they don''t cultivate effective working relationships. The people skills, the so-called ''''soft skills,'''' are what get the ''''hard goods'''' delivered. Employees may join organizations because of the brand or the benefits, but they invariably choose to leave because of poor relationships.
With pragmatic models and examples, Barrett shows us the four relationship behaviors and their dynamics that are at work in companies--and in life. High-level, smart information abounds in  Cultivate, but so, too, does Morag''s generous outlook and philosophy.
You will learn to identify Allies, Supporters, Rivals, and Adversaries, and how to turn Adversaries into Supporters and Supporters into Allies.
The relationship lessons you''ll learn in  Cultivate will stay with you long after you''ve finished the book.

As the founder of SkyeTeam.com, an international leadership development and HR consulting firm, she has had the opportunity to work with more than 3,000 leaders from 20 countries and on 4 continents. Alumni and Clients appreciate her pragmatic, engaging and no nonsense approach to the ''soft skills'' which enable the ''hard results'' to be achieved.

Morag''s experience ranges from senior executive coaching, to developing high impact teams, to leadership development programs across Europe, America, and Asia. With 25 years'' experience in industries around the globe, Morag understands the challenges of running a business and managing people.

If you first accept the premise that all work collapses down into only two essential ingredients - communicating with others and building relationships (and you should)... then the thoughtful, readable approach that Morag presents in Cultivate makes all the sense in the world.

Morag takes elements from servant leadership, EQ, and systems thinking, and creates a model for self-coaching that can make us all better humans on the journey of life. Despite the increasing overlay of technology to de-humanize work processes, it remains true that all of work life is about one-on-one relationships. Knowing and building on your own personal relationship system is at the heart of the book, and the stories and advice given here have substantially more worth than most similar books on the subject. Highly recommended. Give it a read!

After finishing the third chapter of this book, I put the highlighter down I realized there is so much to highlight here. There is a lot of meat to this topic in “Cultivate”. It is very thoughtful, clear and easy to use. First, there are many small bites and quotes that I found in particular and know I will use in the future. A few points on that:

• People need to be aligned to execute on the plan
• It backs up the premise that EQ is critical to relationship success
• It’s equally focused on your tough relationships, and not just on the good and easy ones.
• If you want to increase performance, you need to improve culture. In order to improve culture, you need to improve relationships, all your relationships. And they in the end may not all be great, but the object is to improve on each one.

• Provides an avenue to find success without it being at the expense of relationships
• It shows how organizational relationships are the key to process success. From what I’ve seen organizations are mostly using process in place of relationships.
• The book does a great job of showing how lack of trust prevents getting to the ideal path, the “Ally Relationship”, and how that is a major cause of lack of team collaboration and success.

Second, the framework described here is very interesting. Of all the times I have read books, and I’ve read a lot, they wind up being either too conceptual, or so detailed they are unusable. This book found I think the perfect balance. It is a framework, very clear, but is not overwhelming, and I really people, including myself, can use it moving forward.

Morag states that in order to do this right you need to invest the time. I don’t disagree, but she also provides tools you can sue at certain points in the process, or in your work life. I recommend the book, recommend that people get it to install the Framework in their people improvement practices, and try to use it to its fullest. I also recommend it for those who might only grab parts of it and try to make their teams more effective.

Yes, there are a million books out there on building and leveraging business relationships, but the brilliant and wonderful Morag Barrett''s terrific "Cultivate: The Power of Winning Relationships" definitely stands out from the crowd! A highly-experienced executive coach and leadership development specialist, Morag also proves herself to be an excellent writer and master storyteller. Written in a simple, straight-forward, and conversational style, "Cultivate" is filled with a variety of valuable tools, tips, and techniques to help the reader enhance their effectiveness through building and nurturing “winning relationships.” And Morag''s central framework -- "The Relationship Ecosystem" model (introduced on page 37) is, alone, worth the price of admission! In short, if I were to recommend just one book on how to "cultivate" better business relationships, this would definitely be it. And as I found out from the back cover of her book, Morag''s name is Scottish for "great"...and she definitely lives up to her name as not just a great person, but as a great consultant and author as well.

Morag Barrett''s "Cultivate: the power of winning relationships" is a thought-filled journey into relationships, and how we interact with the people around us. Whether you are in school, in the workplace, or in a community, dealing with people is a required skill in daily life. Cultivate provides you with insights, tips, and tools to help you understand and influence your relationships, personally and professionally. For example, in business, too often people focus on their technical skills and not on their people skills. Those who succeed and flourish, however, know that you almost always have to work as a team in order to truly succeed. Cultivate lays out in clear terms how to identify the types of relationships you have and how to foster those that are most beneficial, your Ally Relationships. I encourage you to read Cultivate and grow. Highly recommended.

I was most taken with the “Ally” category of relationships with Morag’s unique take on its definition. Allies aren’t just cheerleaders; they are that rare and precious person who will tell you the hard truths that will allow you to flourish. Too often we consign that person to an adversarial role instead of appreciating the gift of honest and useful feedback. And if we’ve ever tried to be an ally to someone and experienced this misunderstanding, we become hesitant to do so for the next person, which is why this trait becomes so rare. My hope is that as her concept of Allies becomes part of the corporate culture, we can all learn how to be a good ally and to accept true allies into our lives. I hope to experience one of the workshops at my institution and start this process of increasing allies. In the meantime, I will work on my own Ally skills, thanks to the exercises in the book.
