Product Description

Leaving her self-imposed limbo in the Bronx, Sofie Michelli heads to Sonoma to stay with Lance and Rese at their villa, where she meets Matt, who is instantly intrigued, but before their relationship can progress, a beloved child from the past calls and sends Sofie into a tailspin--and back to New York. Original. 30,000 first printing.

From the Back Cover

The whimper came, no more than a note of longing--or fear--in a child''s throat. Sofie reacted instinctively, each nerve pulled taut. But when she opened her eyes, there was no warm, damp cheek, no tiny brow wrinkled with sleep-swept worries. She sank back as sorrow, marrow deep, found a familiar fit.....

Even in the midst of her affectionate and chaotic Italian family in the Bronx, Sofie Michelli feels alone. Caught in a net of loss and despair, Sofie knows it is time to let go, to start again.

Rese is not sure what to make of Lance Michelli''s healing gift, but she feels protective of this humbled version of the swaggering man who turned her life inside out. As they find new footing, the Sonoma villa they once intended as an inn becomes a refuge for the downtrodden--including Lance''s sister Sofie.

Driven to protect the weak and innocent, Child Protective Service worker Matt Hammond responds to a call and finds an infant abandoned to the care of an odd assortment of misfits. He reserves judgment on the unconventional caregivers--who both concern and fascinate him--but he is especially drawn to Sofie, the mesmerizing woman with a dancer''s poise, eyes like dark copper pennies--and scars on her wrists.

No question this was a hard book to read. It was sad, joyful, poignant, loving, hard, cruel, and truthful. Each character, of which I felt there were too many, had substantial roles and helped color this work.
It is about manipulation masquerading as love. Real love frees people to come and go. What was in this story they called love was all about control and manipulation. I was very surprised that the main character with her almost PhD in Psychology couldn’t see it. She was too close to the situation but it made her seem rather dense that she couldn’t apply what she had learned.

Finally in the end it was a near non-Christian who opened her eyes. Personally I don’t like when the situation seems so impossible and in a paragraph the answer arrives and the whole story is solved. I want it to be like real life when a solution is mostly worked out with time. None of the work was shown, just a few pages telling us things were happy ever after.
Don’t get me wrong. I love Kristen Heitzmann''s books. They are deep and thought provoking. I would highly recommend this. But, she took a very difficult topic of emotional child abuse and showed how an adult worked through it but not the child in the story. As a teacher who saw kids like this, they don’t get better in a few months. Their brains are twisted and it takes the rest of their lives to learn normal behavior and thought patterns.

I LOVED THIS SERIES!!!
A master with the words, Ms. Heitzmann tells a story both poignant and compelling and breathtaking. As in real life, evil is pervasive in this story, but the Truth and Father’s love more so. I wept and chewed my nails and fought for Sofie to have her freedom and embrace true joy.

“I don''t harbor grudges. It only makes the wound grow deep.”

I read in awe as Lance allowed himself—gave himself—to be used by God—and was.

“ ‘If travail has a purpose, let me find it now. If honor needs a taker, O Lord, me endow. If wisdom is a garment, let me wear it well; if goodness needs a champion, help me dark dispel.’ ”

I begged Matt to give credence to their faith, urged him on as he struggled to reconcile two diametrically opposite experiences.

“…he groped for words to reach a being out there somewhere who might be listening after all. ‘God help me,’ he murmured, then realized they were the words he needed…”

If there is a single truth to be grasped from this story, Ms. Heitzmann says it well,

“God isn''t only in the glorious moments, but the dark and hopeless ones as well. Maybe most of all.”

Echoes neatly concludes the Michelli Family Series. And yet, I could read more of this family, I could visit with them in the villa, another misfit who found a place to belong.

I purchased this book on Amazon. I offer my review of my own free will, and the opinions expressed in my review are my own honest thoughts and reaction to this book.

I copied the review from Book 2. No need to read both of my reviews; read the series instead!

I accidentally bought two of these books while browsing. Apparently, I clicked on the Buy Series button on my phone and could not return it. I already owned book 1 and read it some years ago, and I remembered being quite impressed, but on that particular day I was looking for Kindle Unlimited books. I tried EVERYTHING I could think of to get the two books (Books 2 & 3) I accidentally purchased refunded and I could not. I was quite upset. I prefer Kindle Unlimited books with audio and these didn''t qualify. The audio were not available in my country so I couldn''t even upgrade them.

I figured since I was so desperate to return them and the Lord didn''t allow that, I should read them. GREAT READS! I loved them! No regrets anymore. Money well spent.

Echoes by Kristen Heitzman is the sequel to Unforgotten. It is a little faster than Unforgotten and I think it is because they are back in Sonoma.
Lance and Rese are back at the Inn, although it isn’t going to be a bed and breakfast. Lance has made Rese upset with him by his not telling her the entire truth. His Nonna has come to live with them from New York City. She is now back in the little room behind the kitchen that was her Nonno’s. Star has come back to stay and she helps take care of Rese’s Mother who is now living with them instead of in a mental health facility. She isn’t always in the present but Star has a way with her. In addition, a young homeless girl is here and she has just had a baby. When the baby was born, he had a cleft palate and he wasn’t breathing. Lance took him and placed his hand over the baby’s nose and mouth. The baby began to breathe and the cleft palate was fixed. Lance claimed there was no cleft palate but the others believe differently. Lance’s sister Sofia comes to live with them and was there when the girl handed her baby to Lance and told him the baby was his and she left. Sofia and Nonna take over taking care of the baby as long as he is here. Child protective services is called in and Matt Hammond comes to see them. He is taken with Sofia.
Sofia has left New York and come to Sonoma to work on her dissertation and to get away from a broken heart. The man she was with was very controlling. He is passionately controlling with his daughter Carly. He told Carly that Sofia had died but she found Sofia’s phone number in his phone and called her. She didn’t talk but did hear Sofia’s voice. When he catches her with his phone, she said she was looking for games. She said her friend Drew told her there were games on phones. The next thing she knows, Drew’s dog has been killed. Could her dad have done that? Why would he? Why would he lie about Sofia?
Between Rese’s mother’s insanity, Star’s eccentricity, Nonna’s age, Lance’s new ability to ‘fix’ things, Matt and Sofia and the baby, and Carly and her father, the plot just thickens. It is a hard book to put down.

I loved this series of books. The author writes beautifully, creating scenes that draw you in. I love the way she weaves both the flaws and the faith of the characters together. This makes them feel real and relatable.

"Echoes"(book 3 in the Michelli Family Series)departs from the main story line of the previous 2 books and focuses on Sophie Michelli, Lance''s sister. Lance and Rese become secondary characters in this book, which is disappointing only because I enjoyed their characters and their tumultuous relationship so much. That is not to say they are no longer a part of the story, but it is no longer told from their perspective. The mystery of the Michelli''s past has also been resolved, making this third book future-focused. I will spare you a summary of the story- if you''re reading reviews you want to know if this book is worth your time and money. Short answer: yes. This is a terrific series from start to finish. You will connect with the characters, you will love the author''s skill at dialogue, you will want to eat really good Italian food, drink espresso, and hang out with friends. You will feel inspired to pray more, fast more, and believe God more. If you ask me, that''s pretty good for a fictional series.

Really enjoyed each of these books in the series as some difficult life situations were major struggles in the characters'' lives. The ending results didn''t come about easily, and not without personal sacrifice because of their relationships with those they loved, but more importantly because of the love of Jesus Christ being lived out in their lives. Greater love has no man than he would lay down his life for another. The story of redemption on more than one level; the story of love for others lived out. These were characters I would enjoy being friends with in real life.

This conclusion to the Michelli Family Series was magnificent in character development, family drama, and mystery. As a retired social worker, I especially appreciated Matt''s role as a child welfare protective services worker. Stef''s professional psychiatric expertise and her personal relationship with Matt and Carly were starkly real. The author skillfully wove the lives of the other characters into the family drama. I loved how the villa became a refuge for the characters and the New York home place was a family oasis. The faith in action of Lance and others was inspiring., The story line kept me on the edge of my seat to the very end. Highly recommended, especially for human service workers.

This is a poingnant novel, the third in a series of three, the first being Unforgotten and the Second Secrets. I am not really a romance or chick lit type of person but there was something in these books which really got to me. They are all gentle novels, but they cut to the heart of moral and ethical issues. I found myself reading all three in quick succession and when I finished the last one I was sad that there weren''t more. This book is about a social worker who is worrried about the seemingly unconventional way in which an extended family are living. It takes you throught he way in whcih their lives intertwine and how the issues are solved in the end. I found myself rooting for the family and wanting everything to turn out right. These books are a definite holiday read and I would recommend every one of them.
