It''s always great for a child to learn that we are all different and special in our own way.
(A great thing for grown-ups to learn too!)
I think it is a must have for your children''s book collection.

On the technical side: the illustrations are cute, it is easy to understand, it has a great message, and it has a kind of musicality, so it is perfect for reading aloud.

(I''m low-key hoping they start making plush Rumple Buttercup toys with detachable banana peel)

Always a fan of Matthew Grey Gubler, so was super excited to see he had a children''s book just out, so I picked it up for my son - it looked interesting, and it talked about carrying a positive message, so seemed like it would be a fun read.

Wow. We have a million books for my son as he *loves* books, but this was one of the most heartfelt and charming books we''ve picked up in a very, very long time. You''ll love the main character - I haven''t read a book to my son in.... I don''t know how long.....that I''ve actually wanted to cry, then jump up and cheer when it all worked out for the lovable character.

This book conveys a very positive message of just being yourself and to not be ashamed of that - I think that''s great for children to learn, but I think it''s always something we as adults could hear every now and then as well.

Art is quirky and cute - my son really liked it and thought it was funny, and the physical book itself was especially well made. You can tell this book, from the story to it''s design, was really made from love.

As a parent, I really couldn''t say anything negative about this book, and encourage everyone who has children to get this book (and even adults too, because we all need to be reminded it''s OK to be different sometimes).

I had never been so excited to receive an Amazon package and I was not disappointed! What a lovely message for any age type that has ever felt out of place or just plain weird! As someone with heavy anxiety, it was a nice reminder that it’s okay to be weird - to be yourself. On the other end, great story for anyone else to be more welcoming and accepting! MGG is a gift to the world!

I love the drawings and I wish I had the $ to buy some art by the author. It’s his handwriting and his illustrations! He’s an actor, writer, director, artist, and now author. Great sense of humor. He has played “Dr. Spencer Reid” on the show Criminal Minds since the first episode, and he’s been in various movies. I couldn’t wait to read it, which I did in one day. Highly recommend it!!!

Rumple Buttercup is an engaging story of a mythical creature’s journey from self-imposed social isolation to the realization that he is part of a community that he had failed to see because he was focused on his own perceived shortcomings. If potential readers can pry themselves loose from their smart phones, the book might introduce them to the possibility of being accepted by live people for who they really are rather than merely being “liked” by remote contacts for the online personas they have created. In addition, the uncomplicated drawings and handwritten text may make some elementary and middle schoolers think, “I could do that,” resulting in their producing their own literary works.
On its website, Random House prominently identifies the author of Rumple Buttercup as an actor/director associated with a particularly violent television crime drama series, and one cannot help but wonder if the publishers weren’t satisfied with the prospect of selling the book to the fans of the program, which this reviewer admits to being (in addition to being a librarian), rather than young readers. Rumple Buttercup could have benefitted from the attention of an experienced children’s book editor to address continuity, introduce more age-appropriate vocabulary, and improve on what is a somewhat unsatisfying conclusion. For example, a better sense of the isolation Rumple Buttercup feels at the beginning of the book would give the ending more impact. Although it could have been a better book, Rumple Buttercup is a very good first effort for the author/illustrator and is recommended, especially for social media addicts of all ages and for teachers and librarians who work with young people who show an interest in writing.

Such a sweet story

As someone who grew up weird, I love having a story embracing that weirdness and learning to love it. It''s a story that I plan to read to my nephew in hopes that he is never afraid to be himself growing up as well. Matthew did such an amazing job with this book, I love it.

To be completey honest, i was purchasing this book for aesthetic purposes because of how cute it was and i also wanted to support the author who made it because i like his work. It took me a few minutes to read but i was actually really surprised with how much i liked it. I think it''s a great book for anyone to read, it''s simple yet effective. I would strongly recommend this to anyone who''s looking for a little boost of positivity in their day. It''s all about embracing our differences, overcoming our insecurites and being accepted by others for who we really are. It''s okay to be different, etc. Definitely one of my favourites.
