I watched a million and a half different YouTube videos on saws, and this one pretty much seemed to be the favorite. I read another million reviews here on amazon, and this one seems to be top rank. Initially, I wanted something bigger, I admit. I was tired of lugging a bow saw around to cut up larger logs, but at the same time I didn''t have a good smaller saw for lighter tasks. I didn''t think the katana was going to be very good for small tasks, and I wasn''t going to buy and carry multiple saws either. So I figured the larger gomboy would be a good balance, medium teeth for versatility. I looked at the bahco laplander, how can you not? It''s probably the top selling bushcraft saw on the market. But I have used saws with stamped teeth, and they suck. I looked a lot at corona, and as far as I can tell, the only real difference is the handle, and the second blade lock position. The silky is obviously much nicer, but is it enough to pay 2-3x the price? Well, I guess time will tell on that. The price does tend to jump around, so if you can grab this for around $40 I''d say it''s a bargain.

Cuts like a hot knife through butter, starting out, I used a fair bit of effort, just being used to push/pull saws. But after a couple cuts, my arms turning to rubber, I started to let the saw do the work. I quickly realized all that effort was wasted. Just running the saw back and forth on the wood, it just goes through it, it doesn''t make any difference if you try to add pressure. You can however make the blade bind up and possibly bend it however, so there''s another reason to let the saw do it''s thing.

So 5 stars might be generous when you could potentially get a corona for half the money that works as well. But there is certainly some added quality to the silky, and the price is really the only fault I can find.

On a last note, the case. It''s a nice heavy plastic latching case, with a lanyard hole and large drain holes. The latch can also be used as a belt loop. That being said, I don''t use it. It just adds bulk and weight, and I can see no necessity for using it for my purposes.

UPDATE: So my friend bought a corona, and we took our saws on a 4 day camping bushcraft trip. We built a 2 person lean to shelter with walls, an outhouse, and a fire reflector, and processed enough wood for a constant fire, plus stores for the next trip. Needless to say we put them through the paces. I noticed that aside from a MUCH nicer and tougher handle, the silky cut quite a bit faster and easier. For logs 4"+ diameter he just left it to me, didn''t even want to bother with the corona. The only place it did outshine the silky, was small limbs, less than finger size. The silky is a little too bitey when the limbs start to nestle in the tooth gaps.

After all that, it''s a little dirty, but still cuts like new. I''m probably going to want a bucksaw still for larger lumber, but this thing is really packable. I don''t notice it when it''s in my pocket most of the time. Sure it sticks up a ways, but not enough to fall out or interfere with me bending or sitting.

This is my first Silky saw, but it is not my first Japanese pull saw. Please note I said "Pull Saw" because Japanese made saws cut while "pulling" the saw, Not "pushing" like the typical American made saw. If you try to cut wood by pushing the saw, using the Silky saw, you will probably break the blade.
My first experiences with Japanese pull saws were from using Vaughan Bear Hand Saws Vaughan 569-10 BS333C Bear Hand Saw with Coarse/Medium Blade, 13-Inch . I have at least 4 different Vaughan saws, but my favorite is the Vaughan Bear Hand Saw. However, unless you save the original packaging, there''s no good way to transport the saw safely. And, in my experience, they are incredibly sharp. The Silky saw is no different in this respect, it is also extremely sharp. But, since the saw blade tucks safely into the handle, when folded, I can stick it in my pocket, or my back pack, and not worry about it cutting something I don''t want cut.
The first thing I cut with the Silky saw was a 5" diameter, 6 foot long, dead Mesquite tree limb. I was impressed with how quickly I was able to saw thru the limb. Especially, since it was a dead standing limb. The wood was so hard, it didn''t break off and fall, until there was only a piece about 1 inch long and 1/2 inch thick, left holding the limb to the tree..
I have a Bahco Laplander Folding Saw in my backpack now. Bahco 396-LAP Laplander Folding Saw, 9-Inch Blade, 7 TPI It is a great little folding saw. And, it has served me well. But, for cutting wood, the Silky saw outperforms it, without question. Although the Bahco Laplander Saw cuts pushing and pulling, The Silky saw cuts faster and cleaner, through wood. However, I will keep my Laplander saw for cutting bone. I haven''t tried the Silky on bone, and probably won''t.
I really prefer pull saws for cutting wood, especially since most of the limbs, I feel the need to cut, are usually above head high. I find it much easier to cut limbs, that are over my head, by pulling on the saw.
This is my first Silky saw, but it sure won''t be my last. Once you learn to cut with a Japanese pull saw, pushing a saw just seems backwards.

This saw cuts through green wood like a hot knife through butter. I use it a lot here lately. Great for making wooden mallets and tarp stakes. I really can’t believe it took me so long to finally purchase one.

Many, many, many years ago when I was in the Scouts, we had a very dull one that our scoutmaster let us use for bush crafting. I guess that’s why I never have been partial to a folding saw. It sucked backsides. This Silky has sure changed my mind. Great saw, ok plastic “confusing” sheath.

I replaced the blade the other day and it was an extremely simple task. Scary sharp, again, scary sharp. Seriously, could actually be used as a defensive weapon in a bind.

I carry it with me when my sons and I go out in the woods. FYI, it only cuts when you pull, not push. This knowledge comes in handy and will curb any frustration. I truly enjoy using it.

I hope this helps someone. : )

Holy cow. Right out of the box, I cut through the pictured quarter of absolutely rock hard hardwood, didn''t time it but it was definitely under three minutes. That is a Mora companion knife sitting on the cut piece of wood, with pictures of the unfolded and folded saw to compare, the folded saw is about 1.5 inches longer than the Mora in its sheath. Since I was cutting on the ground, the second, folded backwards position was perfect for finishing the cut. I ordered the medium teeth, certainly had no problem with dried hardwood, other reviews say it''s good for Green wood as well. I don''t know what else you could want for a camping saw, ultralight backpackers would probably want to look at the pocket boy, as this is a fairly large saw, but the amount of work this thing will save would probably outweigh (yikes) the extra ounces in the pack. I''m handy, have cut plenty of wood with Corona folding saws and similar, started without any gloves, but when I saw this ripping through the wood, went and grabbed a pair. Very little binding or bending, I know this is a pull saw so I lightened up a little bit on the pushes, even took a couple different angles to saw the wood quicker, no problem indexing, if there is such a thing as an ultimate handsaw, I think this is it. For the price? Give me a break. If somebody wants to send me a Laplander to try, I will, but for $10 more I know there''s no comparison with this.

Many people have noted that this saw cuts like a chainsaw. I''d like to point out some differences.
It does cut very quickly and easily, but you have to provide the sawing motion manually.
It isn''t oily from the chain oil. It won''t get your pocket or backpack oily.
It will fold up and fit in the side pocket of my hiking pants. I could not find any chainsaw that could do this.
It''s quieter.
It doesn''t leak gas nor does it stink like gas.
I can''t say it''s cheaper. There is a plug in chainsaw on Amazon for $42. But you would need to pack along a generator.
It''s way lighter than a chainsaw. I would not want to pack a chainsaw for a few miles up and back. All in all a labor saver.

I took it on it''s first outing and cut a bunch of offending brush and tree branches out of the trail. Worked great. Not so good for willowy pencil thin stuff, but anything 3/4" or larger it was great for.

I''ve used this thing on just about everything now and it''s still a Vicious Little Cutter. I give it 7 stars out of five.
********************************************************

Having acquired this saw for my bug out bag, I found it to be a constant little buddy when working in the back yard.

Recently set a dozen fence posts along a property line infused with low hanging/spreading coniferous branches along the entire way. This little "Sawz-all" carved a 3'' fence[work] path magnificently. For hardwoods like dogwood, branch removal left a smooth, properly-angled cut to the tree .. with minimal effort. And that''s the point .. this tool wasn''t designed to give its users a workout but rather a fast, efficient result with minimal effort.

So when I''m outside, this little rascal often stays in my back pocket; just too handy to not have along. If the price is your beef, get over it. This is an awesome little tool built many years of pruning if used thoughtfully.

The only complaint is the kind-of-dumb plastic storage container it comes with. Nobody''s going to strap a goofy hinged thing on a belt; a simple kydex sheath would be way better. But other than that, get this saw. You''ll use it for almost your pruning/cutting needs.

***********************************************************************

11-18-2019. Update.

Still love this cutter. It''s absolutely a vicious little tool and I carry it every time we head out of state to the in-laws. Having used it extensively in backyard cleanups, it''s still as sharp as the day I got it. A tad expensive but worth every dime.

I watched a lot of reviews about different saws and the Silky Gomboy 240 was highly recommended a lot. I thought I would give it a try and I''m very happy with my purchase. As soon as I received it, I tested it out on several logs ranging in diameter from 2" to 6" and it cut through everything with ease! It''s very comfortable to use and feels very well-made. The manufacturer paid a lot of attention to detail and used quality materials in the Silky saws. The blade lock up feels very solid and I never felt like it might fail. I recommend this to anyone looking for a saw that can cut anything from small branches/trees around the yard to decent size logs/trees when camping for fire wood, hiking, clearing trails or even woodworking. It fits easily in a backpack and comes with a high quality case.

Baring in mind the person who cut this for me is not into d.i.y or heavy odd jobs, cutting or such. So the image is from them. It indeed cuts like a hot blade through butter, believe it!!! Requires no effort at all as it''s all on the pull stroke reducing the stiff awkward tension with conventional saws. And is easy to use light and with some grip. It''s better than your conventional saws with and without double serated teeth both of which I''ve used and are a lot bigger and nastier to look at. I would consider the tool for d.i.y jobs bushcraft in ( which will be it''s main goal) because it''s compact and easy to use and sharper as well as leaving a smoother finish. The obvious choice was the baco laplander which is like the saw of all bushcraft kinds they use. Rather than go with the status quo I decided to weed out the top two. I eventually went with the silky gombo 240( but with intentions of the 210 but chose a longer blade) because of the cut and stainless steel construction. In my opinion it seemed to do a job quicker and neater. And it looked bad ass. The whole thing is sturdy and strong with chrome plated latch for dropping the blade and a thick heavy rubber handle and the ability to loosen the tension of bladed

I''d already bought a Silky Pocket Boy having watched a YouTube channel (Thanks Lars) and was amazed how easy it cuts through anything that is wood. For slightly bigger adventures I went for the Gomboy 240 (MM) as it is just that bit bigger for pruning bigger stuff where I don''t feel safe with a chain saw and holy cow I am hardly using the chain saw. By the time you check over the saw, prime it, start it, warm it up the Gomboy''s cut through the branch. Silky saws cut on the pull stroke. I cut and prep a lot of fire wood as we have a wood burner. Hence to say I will never ever pick up a bow saw ever again. With a 240mm long blade that folds into the handle it is still very portable in a back pack for camping or hiking. Once you use a Silky you''ll never look back.

The double blade edge is very good, but the blade wobbles a lot more than I thought it would. About the delivery - The seller takes the money up front and it takes about 2 weeks to arrive. Also, I had to pay an extra £19.24 to receive the item due to a "customs charge", so I do not class this as free delivery. I contacted the seller and was promised a refund for the £19.24 in return for proof of payment. I provided proof of payment, but no refund has come after 1 week, hence the 2 stars instead of 3 (if refund arrives I will upgrade to 3 stars). So I would say if cutting ability is all that matters to you, and money is no object, then this is not a bad choice. If you are looking for value for money, more blade sturdiness and a better holder, then go for one of the cheaper options with no customs charge.

This is a brilliant saw and has exceeded most of my expectations. It varies ever so slightly from the picture, must be a newer model. Simply has a rubber texture added to the lock - perfect as a thumb rest. There were just two minor details that could have been better though. Where the lanyard hole is, at the bottom of the handle, the plastic is quite jagged around the inside of the hole, which isn''t a problem for me but it doesn''t exactly fill me with confidence and might wear away at any lanyard you decide to put through it. The second thing, is that the saw blade doesn''t close into the handle as easily as you would think. It tends to get caught on the rubber handle. And you end up trying to close it really slowing to try and line it all up. It would have been nice if there was something to guide the blade into handle. Just a Slightly wider opening at the end of the handle and metal either side of the opening would have allowed for that minor flex in the blade. Other than that, the saw feels amazing in the hand and the locking mechanism is really sturdy. It''s an impressive buy ! And very useful for camping
